I really don't listen to a lot of Dead from this era but on repeatedly being lead to this show, I thought I'd give it a try. I have to say it's excellent for this era and much better than anything else I've heard from this year. A great setlist to boot. The big 'but' for me is that I clearly did not enjoy this as much as many of the reviewers below. I found while the quality of the playing remains consistent throughout the show, the vocals (both Jerry and Bobby) go a bit downhill in the second set.
PS the "Fozzie Bear choking on a hot dog" reference below gave me a good laugh.

So much to say about one of the most emotional shows ever. Yeah , the date is correct. Jerry has entered the Fozzie Bear choking on a hot dog vocals period , but he has some rip your hear out (in a few different ways) songs here.
Not much to find in first set. Cumberland is good, if not the nasty patch at the end.
It's Set 2, baby. Set 2.
CR&S , Garcia's freight train vocals, full of emotion and tasty Bobby licks all the way through makes this a 1%. My personal All-Timer.
And Morning Dew.....

It was great to an east coast Deadhead. 1984 was year of ups & downs. Jerry looked terrible. However he was playing like a man possessed. This is my favorite from '84. It gets 5*****.

Subject: Top Ten for 1984 !!
"Even the lobsters were tripping tonight"
- attendee at 10/12/84

I can't believe I'm picking yet another October show for my top tens, but there's just no denying that this Fall run in the east was really a high point in the year. There was some serious competition from 10/11 and 10/15, both available
only as AUD sources, and please do yourself a favor and check out those fine AUD recordings, esp. the Oade sources. Great shows, as is 10/17. I must've listened to over parts of 6 different shows tonight trying to pick my top ten. This one, however, was an immediate standout from the first song, I knew this show had that extra ingredient, that mojo touch that makes it special. An excellent representation of the 1984 sound here, full, lots of bass, depth and a certain 1984 ambiance I can't explain - others have called it "melty" "being underwater" "gooey" or "like a warm fuzzy something".

I'm surprised that I ended up picking this one, because usually the song lists are a major factor in what makes a show special for me. And this song list doesn't thrill me at all. No Estimated,
no Terrapin, no Scarlet>Fire, not even an Other One or a Shakedown!!
But everything is played with such energy and soul that even the mediocre songs shine. I feel the same way about the 5/6/89 show at the Frost. Kinda lame song list that includes Pocky Way.
But my God what a show that is! So you can't always tell the quality of a show from the sets, like the book/cover thing. But I digress.

Stranger, never one of my favorites somehow is "just perfect" as the opener tonight. Really confident and tight playing, gets the show off to a blazing start. Stranger is kinda the "Dancin"
of the 80's for me, since Dancin started so many sets in the late 70's.
Roses is a semi rare treat, and Jerry delivers a soulful version with just a little croak for sincerity's sake. Ditto for Jack a Roe, pulled out of retirement since 1982. Great to hear it again here, and it adds to the uniqueness of the set. Cumberland smokes like a fatty. The coffee is perking now. Then the closer, Music just cruises like a well maintained sports car. Garcia wails and then wails some more. You wish it lasted longer, but all in all a very strong set that gets your attention and pulls you in.

The Cold Rain opener is for me, further validation that this is a Jerry show tonight, with him taking the lead in setting the vibe
for the group. The Roses and Jack a Roe in Set One told us that, and the stunning Uncle John>Morning Dew to come in Set Two will clinch this as a night when Garcia parted the Haze just enough to deliver a clear and focused performance, while still leaving enough Haze to put that extra layer of mystery and magic to
each song.
As mainly a 1969 to 1977 kinda listener, it took me a long time to warm up to Sailor/Saint when I started listening to 80's shows. Then I "got it" about this pairing and I've since considered them
some of my favorite Bob songs, of which there are not many. Sailor is kinda Bob's "Terrapin" you know? Mystical, with cascading runs from Jerry, deep lyrics, mythical even. This pairing, even though I would prefer a Help>Slipknot or a
Playin in this spot, nevertheless takes the set to the next level. Some scorching leads from Jerry on Saint. Great vocals by all here as well. At over 7 minutes, they do some "saintly" jamming
that sounds at times like a Dark Star on steroids, or at a faster tempo.
Okay, so then we get Don't Need Love. But let's not forget that even in the primo year of 1973 we had to put up with "You're Not Woman Enough". And, the Uncle John's Band that follows quickly
makes up for the weak spot. At 11 minutes, there's plenty of fine jamming, with Jerry weaving colored curlicues of music in the air.
Then instead of bringing back the chorus, they drift into a 5 minute Jam that sounds like Dark Star, China Doll or Sage and Spirit all in one. This lovely UJB>Jam is truly one of the high points of 1984 and a prime example of what they were still capable of even if 1972 was 12 years past.
Jerry and Bob do some nice duets during Space. Then we get the "leftover" Playin reprise that they didn't do on 10/11, which is a fun little joke for those that were stoned enough to get it. Jerry plays with the theme for awhile with Bob and Brent filling in with trippy background counterpoint.
And speaking of leftovers, what about that last chorus of UJB? They leave no turn unstoned tonight, giving us a splendid short jam and then the gorgeous harmonies at the end. The ease with
which the boys flow from Playin to UJB into Morning Dew immediately brings to mind those famous sandwiches from 1973 using this trio of songs.
I'll leave you to discover this Dew on your own, oh intrepid ones. Suffice to say that this is one of "the" songs that really shone brightly in 1984, and this version is a show stopper. Jerry sings his liver out, and maybe a few other organs besides. Brent's Leslie is making the whole arena spin, and even on this AUD patch in Set Two, Phil's bombs are devastating. Jerry channels Duane Allman for some killer bending leads, then brings the whole thing to a roaring climax. Did the Civic Center need roof repair after this?

With Good Lovin for an encore, the only thing that would improve this is a full SBD source with the Charlie Miller treatment. CM, hello?
Very recommended for 1984 virgins.

Enjoy,
Dr. Flashback

Remember after the dew? What encore would do that justice? Well, G=lovin did it... and how about the silence in the lot afterwards??? not from the state police, but from the satisfaction from the show that we all didn't know what to crank after such an emotional experience????

I was at these shows. I recall it being the first tour that had booklets for all shows on a tour, and after giving away our Worcester tix in richmond headed home to the Blue ridge Mountains where our transmission went out. Finally got our tour mate to use his car. 2 of us were ready to hitch to Maine, but it was not nessesary and we made it . The Niagra Falls show in the spring had me willing to follow this Band wherever to get that loving feeling. I really think that the Band loved Maine ,because all of the shows I saw there were superb. These being my first there, and what a 2 night stand it was split Playing (reprise the second night ) everything great . I remember the El Paso from Hartford (next stop)First since the death of Marty Robbins. Anyway if you were at this venue , and at that 1 hotel that shared a parking lot then you went on a TRIP

Subject: Magic Night in Maine
A big crew drove up from Middlebury College to catch this run in Augusta, and we were well rewarded for our efforts.

These two Augusta shows were a perfect combo, and while 10/12 is the superior show, both were tremendous fun.

My friends and I were all "dialed in" properly both nights, as I think a huge chunk of the crowd was. The whole scene was a blast outside and inside the civic center (though I do recall seeing bogus tour tickets being sold for $20).

The 12th was a high-energy burner from the outset and was incredible throughout. I'm pretty sure the long whistle you hear in Cold Rain & Snow is my pal Mark. I hadn't listened to this show for a while, but it sure brought back memories.

I just caught two very fun Lesh shows in NYC during his long run at the Nokia, and as good as those shows sounded, it's plain to see that there was nothing like a GD concert. No knock against Phil. But when the Dead delivered the goods, no matter the era, the music took you places that no other group can (at least to this fan).

Definitely a top-5 among the 150 shows I saw from 1977-1995.

This show goes down as my favorite of 1984;On this night I brought in 38 pounds of digital audio processing equiptment on my back and connected to some nak mic's on shotguns on either side of the soundboard.I lost count at about twenty five d-5 cassette recorders running from behind my d/a signal. On this night everything went right and I walked with the un-interrupted master.
instead of Drums and then Space this night it seemed like the jamming started towards the end of don't need love and carried right on thru Morning Dew.(minus space).
in retrospect,it was worth boiling my pet lobster before this show (the poor thing).
Nice hearing the soundboard.

Subject: We Got to have LOVIN !
I remember this being the tape to get from this tour

The Stranger opener is fierce, lots of reverb on the vocals, ‘if this were love,’
‘It must have been the Roses’ did not get played all the time so it gets cheers right out of the gate, (Jerry sounds like the Maine chilly air has gotten to him, Brent helps out nicely with some backing vocals.)
On the Road Again-very rare electric version! A Quick time Jack –A-Roe ‘This couple they got married’ (Let the dance marathon begin). Used to LOVE Her-Another tune not always a regular, (Bobby sounds hoarse too!) Funky Cumberland Blues (Love the girl, hate the mines), MUSIC!!! Nice hot jam to end set. ’full of singing and romancing’

Rain & Snow ‘married me a wife’ Sailor>Saint (Why did this couple part)
Don’t Need Love: You know this was before Brent had taken center stage and this song rubbed many people the wrong way. Sounds like the blues too me! The way Brent presents this tune is part of the problem; it is kind of an awkward song at times. But I know what the man was feeling!
This was the show I believe where Jerry walked off during ‘Don’t Need Love’ and came back to lead the band into a heartfelt ‘Uncle John’s’ –We do NEED LOVE!
The Drums and Space are nice; this was one of those very small venues the Dead would squeeze in off the beaten path, as you can tell- well worth the effort to be at such an intimate show.

I have just read the rest of the reviews. Yes, there are sound quality issues but if we are just talking which show just kills for this East Coast tour and has a dream set list that is very well played -this show gets my vote.

I like the comments about ‘LOVE’ posted by SFCwent, Love seem to be the common theme of this show, almost all the tunes have a tie in to love in some way.

Post Drumz--------Playin >Uncle John’s Reprise > DEW!

Listen to the collective roar that goes up for the rare GOOD LOVIN encore

Stranger. Nuf said. One of the better ones ever. Long and tight.

A sweet 1st set really. Music Never Stopped crackles with energy. Jack-A-Roe is rocking.

The only negative with this show is the shocking cut mid-way through UJB as the board goes awol. I wonder where the rest of the show is...
Hopefully its residing in the vaults somewhere.

I think I might actually buy it if it comes out.

legit 4.5 stars for the playing (5 goes to the Cornell's etc..)

2 stars for the awol 2nd set.

My favorite show from '84.

I agree, this is a solid show. Stranger, Cold Rain and Snow, the Dew are very noice. However, this recording has a sporadic static that seems to be limited to the left channel. In either event, it is very annoying. I will keep this one for posterity but it won't get much play time.

This is another one of those times where they bury the fine print. While the source is ID'ed as a Master Soundboard Cassette, check out the text file and find out that from mid-UJB until the end of the show there is an AUD patch. This really burns me up because that part of the show that is MSC is really high quality, whereas the AUD patch is decent, not great. It turns what was probably a 4.5 show into something less, which is too bad, because this show does have some fine moments .. the UJB and Morning Dew especially, during the 2d set. I will say that while this is a fine fine Dew, comparisons to Cornell, or even the 9/18/87 version are a bit of a stretch.

Had this MSC been a full show, I'd give it a 4, the AUD patch drops it down to a 3.

NEUTRAL RECOMMENDATION

Subject: the long awaited
ok, i've been waiting for this one for a long time. i can belabor how important this show is to me, but i won't. suffice it to say that this show has accompanied many a candle-lit evening for nary twenty years.

the issue here is sound. the resonance on audience recordings is my preferred choice. the civic center rang with phil and sustained notes that shook the rafters while the high end snuck underneath like a slinky serpent. for that, the audience recordings are superior. however, the fob is nefariously lacking in the drums to space segue which is, to me, what this show is all about, "the meat" as it were.

a preferable solution -- if there are any tech wizards who would take notice -- would be to graft the missing drums into space portion onto/into the fob, perhaps even tracking some audience there as well from the ouade. sounds complicated, complex and labor intensive, yes, but this is a magical show. it has that "je ne sais quois" of energy that a lot of shows couldn't recapture after jerry's '86 illness. call it controlled wild abandon.

nonetheless, having seen reviews from 9-18-87, this is my '80s answer to the cornell '77 dew. what it lacks in perfection and rock and roll, it makes up for in depth of soul. ahh, the good ole grateful dead. (not five stars because i still yearn for the *perfect* audience).
